Fort Larned National Historic Site
(LAHR-ned) ( 1.1 sq mi/2.9 sq km), 3 mi/4.8 km W of
Larned, Pawnee co., central Kansas. Protected travelers on the Santa Fe
Trail; served as a military base during the Indian War (1868-1869) and
later as an Indian Bureau administrative center. Fort est. 1859,
deactivated 1878, sold at public auction 1884. Historic site authorized
1964; est. 1966.
