Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site
, Williams co., W
N.Dak., and Roosevelt co., NE Mont. Reconstructed trading post of the
American Fur Company, erected in 1828 (originally called Fort Floyd),
on Missouri R. just NW of and opposite confluence of Yellowstone R.
( 378 acres/153 ha in N.Dak., 64 acres/26
ha in Mont.). Controlled converging routes of travel from the Rocky
Mts., for c.40 years it was the most important post in the U.S. fur
trade and was under the control of Amer. fur trader Kenneth Mackenzie.
When the U.S. army assumed control in 1868, Fort Union was torn down
and Fort Buford, a military post, was erected nearby. Authorized
1966.
