Frederick , county ( 667 sq mi/1,728 sq km; 1990 pop. 150,208), N Md.; Frederick; 39°28'N 77°24'W. Bounded N by Pa. line, SW by the Potomac (Va. state line), NE by Monocacy R.; also drained by Catoctin Creek. The largest co. in Md., it was named either for Prince Frederick, son of George I or Frederick Calvert, the 6th Lord Baltimore, and settled primarily by Irish and Germans. Rolling piedmont area, with extreme W in the Blue Ridge (locally called South and Catoctin mts.) and Middletown Valley. Rich agr. area (wheat, corn, hay, dairy prods., fruit; poultry, livestock). Diversified industries, especially at Frederick. Mt. resorts; black-bass and trout fishing. Includes Sugar Loaf Mt., part of the abandoned Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, Gambrill State Park (W). and parts of Catoctin Recreational Demonstration Area, and Gathland and Washington Monument state parks. Formed 1748.
