the Sierra Nevada (E), where there are peaks over
14,000 ft/4,267 m. San Joaquin R. forms most
of N boundary. Drained by Kings and Fresno rivers. Friant Dam
is in co. Oil and natural-gas fields in SW (Coalinga dist.). Rich
irrigated valley sect. produces raisins (large part of U.S. crop),
table grapes; cotton, figs, nectarines, oranges, almonds, lettuce,
garlic, tomatoes, sugar beets, rice, corn, beans; barley, oats, wheat;
also has dairying and cattle. Diversified mfg. at Fresno. Sand and
gravel, stone quarrying; oil and gas. Timber (pine, fir, cedar).
Huntington, Shaver, Florence lakes (resorts); winter sports areas; and
hunting and fishing attract vacationers. Delta Mendota Canal
(irrigation) terminates in NW co., Calif. Aqueduct crosses co., in SW
center; Pine Flat L. reservoir in E center, Millerton L. reservoir and
State Recreation Area are on co. line, San Joaquin R. Large part of
Kings Canyon National Park and parts of Sierra and Sequoia natl.
