12 mi/19 km SSW of Carson City, bet. Carson
Range and Carson R., in foothills of Sierra Nevadas. Elev.
4,788 ft/1,459 m. Founded c.1849 as Mormon
Station, renamed 1855. Was 1st permanent settlement in state. Was
capital of Douglas co. 1861-1916. Old courthouse (1865) is now a mus.
Toiyabe Natl. Forest to W; L. Tahoe 5 mi/8 km
W; Mormon Station State Historical Park is here. Hot springs, pools
