Gibson Island
, resort village, Anne Arundel co., central Md.,
on narrow neck bet. Chesapeake Bay and Magothy R.,
14 mi/23 km NNE of Annapolis. Known for
yachting. Named for Colonel Joseph Gibson, a local landowner, taken
prisoner by the British in 1813. A monument on the isl. commemorates
Stuart Symington (1884-1926), who established a settlement here in
1921. Nearby is Fort Smallwood, fortifications erected by the federal
govt. in 1896, and subsequently turned over to the city of Baltimore as
a 100-acre/40-ha public park with a view of the harbor.
Also nearby is Fort Carroll where then Colonel Robert E. Lee supervised
construction of fortifications from 1849 to 1852.
