Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve
, park (5,040 sq mi/13,052 sq km),
preserve (90 sq mi/234 sq km), SE Alaska, NW of Juneau. Proclaimed as
Glacier Bay Natl. Monument 1925; estab. as park and preserve 1980,
designated Biosphere Reserve 1986. Glaciers descending from the
towering snow-covered mts. into the bay create one of the world's most
spectacular displays of ice (origin of icebergs). Among the bay's most
famous glaciers is Muir Glacier, c.2 mi/3.2 km
wide and rising c.265 ft/80 m above the water.
Entire Glacier Bay was glacier-bound as recently as 1750. Wildlife
includes bears, deer, mt. goats, whales, and water-fowl. Park lodge,
camping 10 mi/16 km NW of Gustavas. Wilderness
area 2,770,000 acres/1,121,019 ha.
