(GLAI-shur) (1,584 sq mi/4,013 sq km),
NW Mont., bounded by Canada (B.C. and Alta.)
on N. North Fork Flathead R. forms boundary in W, Middle Fork
Flathead R. forms SW boundary, U.S. Highway 2 skirts S perimeter of
park. Many lakes, include McDonald, Harrison, Logging, Quartz, Bowman,
and Kintla W of Continental Divide; Two Medicine, St. Mary, Sherburne,
Glenns, and Waterton E of the Divide. Large mountainous area with the
Continental Divide running SE-NW through its center, the park contains
some of the most beautiful primitive wilderness in the U.S. and the
most glaciated part of the U.S. Rocky Mts. There are about
50 glaciers, more than 200 glacier-fed lakes (L. McDonald
and St. Mary L. are the largest), high peaks, sheer cliffs,
waterfalls, large forests, much wildlife, and a great variety of
wildflowers. Together with the adjacent Waterton Lakes Natl. Park
(Alta., Canada), it forms Waterton-Glacier Internatl. Peace Park
(estab. 1932). A variety of campgrounds, historical lodges, high-mt.
chalets, and other accommodations in or near the park;
52 mi/84 km serpentine road bet. St. Mary (E)
and West Glacier (W); crosses Divide into Logan Pass. Estab. 1910.
