, town (1990 pop. 1,946), Goliad co., S Texas,
60 mi/97 km N of Corpus Christi, on the San
Antonio R.; elev. 167 ft/51 m. It is a market
for the surrounding farm region (cattle; corn, sorghum). Oil and gas;
printing. A Spanish mission and presidio moved to Goliad in 1749. After
the start of the Texas Revolution (1836), Goliad was seized by Texan
forces under Col. J. W. Fannin. When Mex. troops advanced into Texas,
Fannin evacuated Goliad with about 300 men but was overtaken.
After a hopeless battle, he surrendered to the Mexicans on March 20,
1836; a week later most of the prisoners were shot. The Amer.
settlement grew up across the river, and the restored mission and the
ruins of the old presidio are in a state park. Coleto Creek Reservoir
to NE; Fannin Battleground State Historic Site to E at Fannin; Goliad
State Park and General Zaragoza State Historic Site S of town.
