Great Falls of the Potomac
, in Potomac R. (here forming state
line bet. Md. and Va.), c.15 mi/24 km WNW of
Wash., D.C. A 3-mi/4.8-km-long series of cascades (greatest
drop 35 ft/11 m) and rapids in
200-ft/61-m gorge. Sometimes known as Great Falls. Power dam
here. Great Falls Park (140 acres/57 ha) is recreational
area on both banks of river; sect. in Md. side is crossed by old
Chesapeake and Ohio Canal (now recreational waterway). A public mus.
includes parts of an iron foundry and mill once owned by George
Washington as well as the Great Falls Tavern. Nearby is the Central
Intelligence Agency and the U.S. Naval Reserach and Development Center,
where ship models are tested.
