Conn., including the borough of Groton and the village of West Mystic
(1990 pop. 3,595), on the Thames R. opposite New London; 41°21'N
72°01'W. Shipbuilding, mfg., and commercial fishing are among the
town's industries; biomedical research facilities. The huge New London
Naval Submarine Base is on the Thames. The Nautilus, the 1st
nuclear submarine, was launched in Groton in 1954 and is
commemorated with a mus. Groton is the site of Fort Griswold
(1775), unsuccessfully defended against the British in 1781. Of
interest are tours of the submarine base and a number of
well-maintained colonial homes. A branch of the Univ. of Conn. is also
