Haleakala National Park
(HAH-lai-AH-ka-LAH) (
45 sq mi/117 sq km), on Maui
isl., Maui co., Hawaii (HI); park area extends SE through Kipahulu Valley to
Puhilele Point on Haleakala Coast, including Waimoku Falls and the
Seven Pools. Originally est. 1916 as part of Hawaii Natl. Park, which
included unit on Hawaii isl., renamed Hawaii Volcanoes Natl. Park,
1960; separated in 1961 as Haleakala Natl. Park. Haleakala volcano, Puu
Ulaula, 10,023 ft/3,055 m high, has been
dormant since the mid-1700s. Its crater,
2,720 ft/829 m deep with an area of
19 sq mi/49 sq km, is one of the
largest in the world. In 1976, 19,270 acres/7,799 ha were
designated as a wilderness area. Main entrance and visitors center via
Haleakala Crater Road from Pukalani. Rare silversword plants and many
native and migratory birds are found here. Biosphere Reserve
(1980).
