Herkimer
(HUHR-ki-muhr), industrial village (
2 sq mi/5.2 sq km; 1990 pop.
7,945), Herkimer co., central N.Y., on Mohawk R., at mouth of
W. Canada Creek, and 13 mi/21 km ESE of Utica;
43°01'N 74°59'W. Formerly shipping, commercial, and trade center
for surrounding Mohawk valley agr. and industrial area that stretched W
through village of Mohawk to Ilion and Frankfort. Today, however, the
industrial center of the Mohawk Valley has greatly declined. Mfg.
includes machinery, consumer goods, wood prods., and firearms. Herkimer
Co. Historical Society has important documents and exhibits here.
World-renowned Herkimer diamonds (actually a clear quartz) are to
be found along West Canada Creek Valley N of the village. Settled
c.1725, inc. 1807.
