Holston
, river, c.120 mi/193 km long,
NE Tenn.; formed by the uniting of its N and S forks; flowing SW
through the Great Appalachian Valley, joining the French Broad R. at
Knoxville to form the Tennessee R.; 35°57'N 83°51'W. Settlement
along the Holston began before the Amer. Revolution, and it was a major
route of westward migration. On the river is Cherokee Dam, a flood
control unit of the Tenn. Valley Authority that impounds Cherokee L.;
there are several smaller dams on the Holston's S fork.
