Hooper Islands
, Dorchester co., E Md., 3 low marshy islands
extending c.12 mi/19 km N-S in Chesapeake Bay,
N of Hooper Strait; separated from mainland by Honga R. Bridged to
mainland (N). Named after Henry Hooper, who owned much of the land on
Upper Hooper Isl. The 4 isls. which form a chain
14 mi/23 km long were settled around 1660 by
colonists from St. Mary's across the bay. A church built in 1872
stands on the site of St. Mary, Star of the Sea (R.C.). One of the
greatest concentrated areas of migrating geese and ducks in Amer., iron
bars are placed over larger windows to prevent wild fowl, attracted by
lights, from breaking panes. Bridge connects N and middle isls.
Fisheries (fish, crabs, oysters) seafood packing houses, vegetable
canneries. Excellent sport fishing, duck and goose hunting. Villages
are Honga and Fishing Creek on N Island; Hoopersville on middle isl.
Lower isl. is uninhabited hunting grounds. John Smith, when caught in a
storm here in 1608, called the area Limbo.
