(HOO-vuhr), on the Colorado R. bet. Clark co., S
Nev. and Mohave co., NW Ariz.; 726 ft/221 m
high, 1,244 ft/379 m long; 36°01'N
114°46'W. One of the world's largest dams. Built 1931-1936 by the
U.S. Bureau of Reclamation; named for President Herbert Hoover; known
as Boulder Dam 1933-1947. A key unit on the Colorado R., the dam is a
major supplier of hydroelectric power and provides for flood control,
river regulation, and improved navigation. Impounds L. Mead, the
largest man-made reservoir in the U.S. at 32,501 cu
yd/24,850 cu m (but does not rank among top 25 in world).
Dam is focal point of Lake Mead Natl. Recreational Area, which extends
N and E around lake, and S around L. Mohave (Davis Dam). Boulder City,
Nev., was built to house workers on the project.
