for 18 mi/29 km. Cape Mendocino is westernmost
point of Calif. Drained by Klamath, Trinity, Mad, Eel, and Mattole
rivers. Mainly in Coast Ranges; includes part of Klamath Mts. in E and
NE, King Mt. Range in SW, Rainbow Ridge in W. Six Rivers Natl. Forest
in E and NE; Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation in N; Humboldt Bay Natl.
Wildlife Refuge in W; part of Redwood Natl. Park in NW; Prairie Creek
Redwoods, Dry Lagoon, and Patrick's Point state parks and Trinidad
State Beach in NW; Grizzly Creek Redwoods and Humboldt Redwoods state
parks in S center; Benbow L. State Recreation Area in S. World's
tallest tree (364 ft/111 m) is near Dyerville.
Logging (redwood, Douglas fir, cedar, spruce), timber; dairying;
cattle, lambs, sheep raising (for Merino wool). Noted recreational area
(fishing, camping, hiking, bathing). Salmon; crabs. Some quarrying and
mining (sand, gravel, clay, gold, silver). Formed 1853.
