Illinois Waterway
, 336 mi/541 km long,
linking L. Michigan with the Mississippi R., N Ill. An important part
of the waterway connecting the Great Lakes with the Gulf of Mexico. The
Illinois Waterway extends from the mouth of the Chicago R., on L.
Michigan, following the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, the lower Des
Plaines R., and the Illinois R. to the Mississippi at Grafton. The
Calumet channels branch SE from the waterway and link it with the
Calumet industrial region along the Ill.-Ind. state line. Principal
cargoes, carried chiefly by barges, are coal, petroleum, and grain
prods. Recreational areas, including the Illinois and Michigan Canal
Natl. Heritage Corridor, have been developed along the waterway. Also
known as the Illinois and Michigan Canal.
