Iowa, on both sides of the Iowa R.; 41°39'N 91°32'W. Mfg. (foam
rubber, animal feed, paper, food prods.). Founded 1839 as the capital
of Iowa Territory. The old stone capitol in the city was begun in 1840;
the legislature sat there until the seat of govt. was moved to Des
Moines in 1857. With the arrival of the RR (1855), Iowa (IA) City became an
important outfitting center for the westward trails. The seat of the
Univ. of Iowa (1855), the city is a major center of medical treatment
and research. The univ. sponsors the Iowa Writers' Workshop, one of
the most prestigious of U.S. creative writing programs, attracting
teachers and students from all over the world. The city's activities
center greatly around the univ. The lib. of the state historical
society is in Iowa City. Nearby are the villages of the Amana Society,
Coralville dam and reservoir, and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Lib.,
as well as his birthplace (in West Branch). Inc. 1853.
