Itasca, Lake
(ei-TAS-kuh) (
2 sq mi/5.2 sq km), Clearwater
co. (SE arm extends into Hubbard co.), NW central Minn., shallow lake,
in a pine-wooded swampy region; 47°13'N 95°12'W. It is the source
of the Mississippi R., which drains N from lake before turning E and S;
stepping stones cross river at its exit point. Henry R. Schoolcraft
identified it (1832) as the source of the Mississippi. Although
unarguably the source of the named river, the river's true physical
course has been disputed by geographers. In 1891 the lake was included
in Itasca State Park, which has a historical and natural-history mus. A
school of forestry and a biological-research station are nearby.
