navigation, power generation, and recreation. Several state parks on
both sides; Sumter Natl. Forest (S.C.) on NE shore. Wealthy coastal
residents established summer homes here in early 19th cent. to escape
oppressive weather in S Georgia. One of the largest inland man-made
lakes in the S.
