Beaucoup Creek. Carbondale (with Southern Illinois Univ.) is dominant
city, in E part. Agr. area (wheat, sorghum, fruit, cattle; dairying),
with some mfg. (wood prods., paper prods., fabricated metal prods.).
Bituminous coal mining. Includes part of Shawnee Natl. Forest and Lake
Murphysboro and Grant City State Parks, also L. Kincaid and Ceder L.
reservoirs. Formed 1816.
