, city (1990 pop. 15,571), seat of Stutsman co., SE N.Dak., on
the James R., in a farm area, 85 mi/137 km W
of Fargo; 46°54'N 98°42'W. It is the trade and processing center
for an agr. area where sunflowers, grain and flour are produced and
livestock is raised, mfg. (food, printing and publishing, ordnance,
construction materials). Jamestown Col., a state home for handicapped
children, and a state mental hosp. are in the city. Fort Seward
Historic Site to W, and a restored frontier village lie to S on the
outskirts. Fish hatchery to NE. Municipal Airport in NE part of city.
Jamestown Reservoir (Jim L.) to N. Pipestone L. to NW. Founded 1871
when Fort Seward was established to protect RR workers, inc. 1881.
