acres/8,108 ha. Part of the New Orleans' French Quarter
(18.6 acres/7.5 ha) is in Orleans parish, in the French
Quarter of downtown New Orleans. Depicts life and Fr. heritage of La.
delta region. Includes park visitor center. The Chalmette Battlefield
(143 acres/58 ha) is in St. Bernard parish,
7 mi/11 km E of New Orleans. Est. 1907; site
of Battle of New Orleans (1812) and Chalmette Natl. Cemetery. The
Barataria unit (19,851 acres/8,040 ha) is in
Jefferson and Lafourche parishes,
15 mi/24 km S of New Orleans. Sample of
Mississippi R. delta ecology, including cypress swamps, marshes,
bayous. Smuggling site provided to U.S. forces by Jean Lafitte's band
during War of 1812. Lafitte helped Andrew Jackson defeat British in
1815 Battle of New Orleans. Isleno or Acadian unit (7.4
acres/3 ha) includes 3 small sites in Lafayette and St.
Landry parishes. Hq. and cultural resources center in Lafayette.
