Platte R. (forms Chatfield and Cheesman reservoirs); drained by Clear
Creek. Remnant agr. in NE part, most agr. replaced by urban growth from
Denver in NE and growth of Lakewood, Golden, Arvada, and other
Jefferson co. communities (sugar beets, beans; livestock).
Fur farms. All but NE part of co. is in Front Range of Rocky Mts. and
its foothills. Includes parts of Pike Natl. Forest in W and S; part of
Chatfield State Park on SE boundary; part of Golden Gate State Park in
NW. Land area was
785 sq mi/2,033 sq km in 1960,
reduced by the encroachment of Denver co. in NE, which adjusts its
boundaries every decennial year to absorb city of Denver's annexations
into neighboring counties. Formed 1861.
