N N.Y.; Watertown; 43°59'N 76°02'W. Bounded W by L. Ontario
and NW by St. Lawrence R.; drained by Black and Indian rivers (water
power). Mfg., esp. at Watertown and Carthage; major dairying region;
metallic and nonmetallic minerals mined. Over
188 sq mi/487 sq km of military
installations, including Fort Drum. Named for Thomas
Jefferson, who was president at time of co.'s creation. New
Englanders, attracted by water power at Watertown, led movement to
establish co. from large tract from Macomb Purchase that had been
bought by Fr. nobleman Le Ray de Chaumont and refugees from the Fr.
Revolution, who returned to France unable to accept the rigorous
difficulties of pioneer life. Winter and summer recreational
areas and state parks on L. Ontario and in Thousand Isls. region of St.
Lawrence R. Formed 1805.
