off the S coast of Brunswick,

causeway); c.7 mi/11.3 km long,
1 mi/1.6 km-2 mi/3.2 km
wide; 31°04'N 81°24'W. Georgia's 1st brewery was once located
here; hops, barley, and cotton once grown. The isl. residents own their
homes but lease the land from the state. Made a state park in 1947, it
was formerly a winter-resort colony of large estates, known as
Millionaire's Village. The Jekyll Isl. club was once among the most
exclusive clubs in the U.S. Famous luminaries living here included the
Rockefellers, Pulitzers, Astors, Vanderbilts, Goulds, Morgans, and
Jennings. First transcontinental telephone call made here in 1915. The
Jekyll Isl. Authority now operates the 240-acre/97-ha
historic dist.
