(JESS-up), village (1990 pop. 6,537), Howard co.,
central Md., 14 mi/23 km SW of downtown
Baltimore; 39°09'N 76°46'W. Originally named Jessup's Cut in the
mid-18th century, shortened to Jessup in 1863. Original site of the Md.
House of Correction, medium-security prison est. in 1878. Also site of
the Md. State Reformatory for Women and the Perkins Hosp. for male
prisoners. Famous for the Baltimore Produce Terminal, housing all the
city's produce markets under one roof.
