(ho-ROO-yo), volcano
(4,330 ft/1,320 m) in Michoacan, central
Mexico, on SW slope of central plateau,
33 mi/53 km SE of Uruapan; crater is
1.2 mi/1.9 km wide; 19°0'N 101°35'W. Elev.
10,167 ft/3,099 m. One of 2 Mex. volcanoes
to develop during historic time (the other is Paricutin), it
1st erupted in 1759, destroying what had been a rich agr. area. Has
numerous craters and fumaroles; thermal waters. Last erupted 1958.
