, river, 170 mi/274 km long,
Kansas; formed by the junction of the Smoky Hill and Republican rivers
at Junction City, in E central Kansas; flows E past Manhattan, Topeka,
Lawrence, and Shawnee to the Missouri R. at Kansas City, Kansas (KS) at Mo.
border. The system drains parts of Kansas, Nebr., and Colo. Heavy
floods (esp. in 1951, 1977, and 1993) on the Kansas and its tributaries
caused great damage to the surrounding farms and Kansas City area.
Although itself freeflowing, numerous dams and reservoirs have been
built on its tributaries to prevent flooding. Locally referred to as
Kaw R.
