, E Md., largest
(c.15 mi/24 km long,
1 mi/1.6 km-6 mi/9.7 km
wide) and most historic of Chesapeake Bay isls., in Queen Annes co., at
S side of mouth of Chester R., E of Annapolis. Separated from Eastern
Shore mainland by narrow channel (bridged). Chester (seafood packing)
and Stevensville are chief villages; others are Love Point (at N tip;
lighthouse); Romancoke (S); Matapeake; Dominion; and Normans. Kent
Point (S tip) has lighthouse. Isl. is E anchor of Chesapeake Bay
Bridge. Large fishing and oystering fleet; seafood processing; tourist
resort, with fishing (bluefish, rock and black bass), bathing, and duck
hunting. William Claiborne est. here (1631) 1st permanent Eng.
settlement in Md., claiming isl. for Va.; Lord Baltimore's grant of
1632 transferred it to Md., and his settlers landed at St. Mary's in
1634, but conflicting claims went unsettled until 1657. Near
Stevensville is Kent Fort Manor (built c. 1638-1640).
