Keweenaw
(KEE-WEE-naw), peninsula,
60 mi/97 km long, projecting NE from the W
Upper Peninsula, NW Mich., into L. Superior; 47°15'N 88°20'W.
Portage L. and a connecting ship canal cut across the middle of the
peninsula, converting its upper portion into an island and creating an
important waterway. Consists mainly of parts of Houghton and Keweenaw
cos. The canal is crossed by a highway bridge with one of the world's
heaviest lift spans. Main towns are Houghton and Hancock.The area is
popular with vacationers.
