Chiniak Bay of Gulf of Alaska; 57°47'N 152°24'W. Major fishing
port; beef cattle; hunting; numerous canneries. Connected to Seward and
Homer by Alaska Ferry system. St. Herman's Orthodox seminary. Russians
under Shelekhov here moved (1792) their main settlement, originally
established at Three Saints Bay, named it St. Paul's Harbor and later
Kadiak or Kodiak. Hq. of Rus.-Amer. Company before it was moved to
Sitka. In World War II Fort Greeley, major army supply base, was built
nearby. Women's Bay coast guard base is
10 mi/16 km SW.
