Lafourche, Bayou
, 107 mi/172 km long, SE La., formerly
a right bank distributary of the Mississippi R., from which it is now
cut off by dam at Donaldsonville, Ascension parish; extends
SE, through Assumption and Lafourche parishes, to Gulf of Mexico bet.
Timbalier and Caminada bays. Called the longest line village in the
world because of the 65 m/105 km of
development on its levee. Navigable to Napoleonville. Crossed at
Leeville by Southwestern Louisiana Canal, and intersected at Larose by
Intracoastal Waterway.
