Md., 10 mi/16 km E of Leonardtown; 38°16'N
76°27'W. Patuxent Naval Air Test Center is nearby. On the grounds of
the center, Mattapany, built early in the 18th cent., is the
official residence of the commanding officer. First
established as a mission by Jesuits, it was reclaimed by Lord Baltimore
in 1641 to prevent the priests from establishing independent
communities. It was called Jarboesville, for an early postmaster, until
1950.
