(a state historical site), Sangamon co., central Ill., on Sangamon R.,
and 16 mi/26 km NW of Springfield; 39°58'N
89°50'W. Here was home of Abraham Lincoln, 1831-1837; bldgs, which
were standing in Lincoln's day (including the Rutledge Tavern, Danton
Offut's store, and the Lincoln-Berry store) have been
restored. A small mus. houses pioneer relics. Settled 1828; decline and
abandonment came after 1839. Official title is Lincoln's New
Salem Historic Site.
