Litchfield; 41°47'N 73°15'W. Diversified mfg. in Torrington,
Thomaston, and Winsted (metal prods., electrical equip., consumer
goods, machinery, glass and plastic prods., textiles, apparel,
machinery, furniture). Agr. (dairy prods., vegetables, fruit; tobacco;
poultry). Many resorts on lakes and in Litchfield Hills; Mt. Frissell
(2,380 ft/725 m), highest point in Conn., is
near Salisbury. Includes part of L. Candlewood, and Waramaug,
Wononskopomuc, Highland, and Bantam lakes, several state parks and
forests; winter sports center at Mohawk Mt. State Park. Drained by
Housatonic, Naugatuck, Shepaug, Farmington, Pomperaug, and Still
rivers. Constituted 1751.
