Mich. The region lies S of Straits of Mackinac, which separate it from
the Upper Peninsula (U.P.), or Upper Mich.; connected to the Upper
Peninsula by Mackinac Bridge. Also referred to as the lower peninsula,
it is bounded W by L. Michigan, N by the Straits, E by L. Huron, St.
Clair R., L. St. Clair, Detroit R., and L. Erie, S by Ohio and Ind.
Comprises 67 of state's 83 cos. Unlike the Upper Peninsula, it is
highly industrialized, esp. S ½, and it is noted for
its agr. prods., esp. its fruits and vegetables. It is characterized by
low moraines, sand dunes, marshes, and lakes, all remnants of past
glaciation.
