Madison , county ( 3,602 sq mi/9,329 sq km; 1990 pop. 5,989), SW Mont., Virginia City; 45°18'N 111°55'W. Agr. and mining region, drained by Madison, Ruby, Beaverhead, and Jefferson rivers. SE corner borders on Idaho, forms Continental Divide. Several small mt. lakes in S and center; Beaverhead Rock State Park on border; Ennis L. reservoir in E; part of Earthquake L., formed (1959) by earthquakes in SE corner. Cattle, sheep, horses; hay, wheat, barley, potatoes. Talc mining, marble, gold, silver, lead, lignite. Parts of Beaverhead Natl. Forest in S, SE, and center; parts of Deerlodge Natl. Forest in N and NW; part of Gallatin Natl. Forest in E, forest includes parts of Lee Metcalf Wilderness Area; Tobacco Root Mts. in N; Gravelly Mts. in S; part of Madison Range in E and Ruby Range in W. Formed 1865.
