Malmstrom Air Force Base
, U.S. military installation (
6 sq mi/15.5 sq km), W central
Mont., 4 mi/6.4 km E of Great Falls, Cascade
co. Est. 1942 during World War II as the take-off point for
Soviet-bound lend-lease material; after the war it was a training base
for crews in the Berlin Airlift. The Strategic Air Command (SAC)
assumed command in 1954; SAC's 1st Minuteman missile wing was est.
here in 1961. The missile complex adjoining the base is one of the
largest in the world. Scheduled for closing in late 1990s.
