on the Missouri R., at the mouth of Heart R., opposite Bismarck;
46°49'N 100°53'W. A RR division point, it is the distributing
center for a grain, livestock, and dairy region; mfg. (printing and
publishing; bldg. materials, wood prods.). Has a large cattle market
and food-processing plants. Industry includes iron, fabricated metal
prods., tile. Lewis and Clark wintered here (1804-1805) in the Mandan
Native Amer. villages. A state industrial school is in the city, and a
U.S. agr. experiment station is nearby. Fort Lincoln State Park to S.
