Manitoulin Islands
(man-uh-TOO-lin), archipelago consisting of
3 large isls. and several smaller ones, in N L. Huron, NW of Georgian
Bay, Ont., central Canada. The isls., in a noted fishing region, are
popular resorts. The permanent pop. is mainly Native Amer. Dairying,
lumbering, mixed farming, and tourism are the major activities.
Manitoulin, c.80 mi/130 km long and from
2 mi/3 km-30 mi/48 km
wide, is the world's largest lake isl. It encloses over 100 lakes and
has a much-indented, rugged coast. Cockburn and Drummond isls. are also
rocky and forested. Drummond Isl. belongs to Mich., and the others of
the group to Ont.
