planned, permanent settlement in Ohio and the Northwest Territory.
Founded in 1788 by the Ohio Company of Associates, among local Mound
Builders' earthworks, Marietta grew as a shipbuilding and shipping
center for a farm area. First houses were in stockaded enclosure called
Campus Martius. Seat of Marietta Col. Points of interest include the
Ohio R. Mus. (est. 1972); Mound Cemetery, where numerous Revolutionary
officers are buried; and the Campus Martius Memorial State
Mus. Inc. 1801.
