Potomac R., c.16 mi/26 km below Washington,
D.C. An amusement park is located on an estate granted to William
Marshall in 1690. The Marshall Hall House, containing period furniture,
dates from the Colonial era when George Washington was a frequent
visitor. Cruise ships from
Washington, D.C. stop here daily most of the year and at Mt. Vernon on
the other side of the river. A jousting (Md. state sport) tournament is
held here every Aug., as knights on horseback try to spear suspended
rings.
