, large crater, SE Coconino co., N central Ariz.,
35 mi/56 km ESE of Flagstaff.
Created by meteorites; 4,150 ft/1,265 m in
diameter, 570 ft/174 m deep, with rim rising
120 ft/37 m-160 ft/49 m
above surrounding plain, about 1 mi/1.6 km
wide. Fragments of iron, containing some nickel, have been found. NASA
used the crater as training ground for Apollo astronauts before their
missions to the moon. Mus. of Astrogeology is at site. Sometimes called
Diablo Crater.
