fruit; dairy prods., poultry); mfg. (tools, hardware, electrical
equip., boats, textiles, metal prods., consumer goods, piano parts,
paper and fiber prods., clothing, transportation equip., agr.
machinery, chemicals, asbestos, cigars); fishing; sandstone and
feldspar quarries. Resorts on shore. Includes Pocotopaug L., several
state parks and forests. Drained by Connecticut (E boundary)
Hammonasset (W boundary), Salmon, and Mattabesset rivers. Constituted
1785. Former site of Haddam Neck nuclear power plant, built in the
mid-1960s on the banks of the Connecticut R., closed in 1996 for safety
reasons. Site heavily contaminated.
