Middlesex co., central Conn., on the W bank of the Connecticut R.;
41°32'N 72°39'W. Mfg. (transportation equip., marine hardware,
rubber footwear, apparel, computer industry, and textiles). Shipping
brought early prosperity to Middletown, and during colonial days it was
the state's leading shipping, commercial, and cultural center. Settled
1650; inc. 1784; town and city consolidated 1923. It is the seat of
Wesleyan Univ. and Middlesex Com. Technical Col. Also in the city are a
state mental hosp., a state correctional school, and a state park. A
bridge (1938) spans the Connecticut R. to Portland.
