Midwest
, region of the United States centered on the W Great
Lakes and the upper-middle Mississippi valley. It is a somewhat
imprecise term that has been applied to the N sect. of the land bet.
the Appalachians and the Rocky Mts. More often it is restricted to the
Old NW Territory and the neighboring states to the S border of
Missouri, E of the Great Plains. Also called Middle West, it thus
includes Ohio, Ind., Ill., Mich., Wis., Minn., Iowa (IA), Mo., Kansas (KS), and
Nebr. The area has some of the richest farmland in the world and is
known for its corn and cattle. The extended area also includes great
wheat fields, particularly W of the Missouri R. The heavily
industrialized parts of the Midwest known as the Rustbelt declined in
the 1970s and 1980s but started on the road to recovery in the 1990s,
as industries modernized on the basis of high technology; financial and
other services increased in importance. The chief cities are Chicago,
Detroit, St. Louis, Milwaukee, and Minneapolis-St. Paul.
