Minnehaha Falls
(min-nee-HAH-huh), Hennepin co., SE Minn.,
53 ft/16 m high, in Minnehaha Creek, which
flows from L. Minnetonka
(23 sq mi/60 sq km) SE to the
Mississippi R. (at its outflow to Mississippi R. is Lock and Dam No. 1
just N of confluence); 44°54'N 93°12'W. The surrounding area,
including the gorge cut by the receding falls, is in Minnehaha Park, SE
corner of city of Minneapolis. Most of the year only a thin trickle of
water passes over the falls. The name Minnehaha (meaning
laughing water) is immortalized in Longfellow's The Song of
Hiawatha.
