Mona Island
(MO-nah), Span. Isla de Mona (
c.20 sq mi/52 sq km), part of
the Commonwealth of P.R., c.50 mi/80 km W of
Mayaguez. Uninhabited isl. It was discovered by Columbus in 1493, and
in 1508 Ponce de Leon stopped here. In 1511 the isl. was ceded to
Columbus's younger brother Bartolome, but it soon became a haven
for pirates and corsairs. Here is a nature reserve (bird sanctuary),
turtle nesting sites, high cliff walls (up to
200 ft/61 m), and caves. Lighthouse on N side.
